Located in Manitoba, Canada, we offer diverse activities throughout the year for varying experience levels: from beginner to more adventure-seeking, from social to adventurous, all in a positive welcoming space with the opportunity to get outside your comfort zone.

    DEADLINE TO REGISTER: BY MIDNIGHT, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22

    Take a day in the beautiful wonderland of Pinawa to experience the fun and relaxation of the winter season. Whether you want to try out fat tire biking, snowshoe in the forest, curl up by the wood burning stove with your favourite book, walk along the Great Trail, or do a combination of activities, the Snow Much Fun Getaway makes it easy for you to participate.

    This all-inclusive day takes place at the Nurtured by Nature Retreat and Playhouse in Pinawa, just an hour’s drive from Winnipeg and will be hosted by life re-creation coach Patti Phillips.

    Arrive at Nurtured by Nature for 10:00 am and get an orientation of the place before you choose your activities for the day. Four fat tire bikes are available to ride the 1.5 km loop trail right out the front door. Several pairs of snowshoes are available if the group wants to venture out together with Patti as your guide or go off on your own to explore.

    A lunch of hearty soup and homemade bread will warm you up before you venture out again in the afternoon. The wall of windows in the living room overlooking the forest connect you with the wintery forest even if you decide to hang around inside.

    Hot drinks and snacks in the afternoon will warm you up before your departure at 4 pm.

    Note: there is a dog and cat on site (this is mentioned in case of allergy concerns).

    Arrival time: 10 AM at Nurtured by Nature Retreat.
    Duration: 10 AM to approximately 4 PM
    Difficulty: All levels of experience welcome. There will be a variety of options to choose from!

    This getaway requires a minimum of 4 participants for the event to take place and there will be a maximum of 8 participants.

    The getaway includes:

    • Nurtured by Nature Retreat and Playhouse “basecamp”
    • Use of fat tire bikes and private groomed trail
    • Use of snowshoes
    • Healthy homemade vegan lunch
    • Afternoon snack

    Good news - there is finally have enough snow, so we can finally get out and enjoy winter! Join us to enjoy a fun evening of skiing in Kildonan Park and Kildonan Golf Course.

    Arrival Time: 6:30 PM. We will begin skiing by 7:00 PM at the latest. 

    LocationWe will meet at Kildonan Park (exact location TBD; details to follow via email)

    Duration: Approximately 5-6 kms, 1.5 Hours

    Difficulty: Suitable for beginners, but prior Cross-Country Ski experience is a must.

    Skiers need to bring their own equipment or bring rented equipment (Ski rentals can be found at MEC, Woodcock Cycle ).

    Please leave dogs at home.

    Members can bring 1 non-member guest to this event at a discounted rate.

    Our Escaladies Night Ice Tower Climb is back for the third year in a row!!

    No experience is necessary to participate in this event. Don't fear - just join us! Backcountry Women will get you through. This event is a truly unique experience with amazing women who empower one another!

    All equipment (harnesses, ice axes, crampons and boots) and instruction is provided. All you need to bring is yourself, warm clothing, and an adventurous attitude. Specific do's and don'ts for clothing will be sent to registered participants via email prior to the event.

    Arrival time: 6:30 p.m

    Difficulty: Moderate; open to all levels!!

    Join Backcountry Women for an informal yet structured and unique learning opportunity. Set topics will be discussed with a lot of opportunities to ask questions. There will be time to chat freely with other women who have common interests and maybe you will find a new adventure buddy.

    For the Monthly Members “Fireside” Chats, we aim to visit a different, local restaurant each month. Participants are responsible for covering the cost of what they order from the menu. This event is open to Backcountry Women members only.

    Climbing teaches mental and physical strength! Our climb nights are a fun and supportive way to get your climb on with an awesome community of women, and potentially try a new sport. Don't fear - just join us!!! Never climbed before? Scared to try? Don't feel like your fitness stacks up to be able to try climbing? Kick those doubts to the curb - Backcountry Women will get you through! P.S. - we have this evening privately booked just for us, so we can cheer for one another and build each other's confidence. We also build your skills during each climb night!

    This event is open to all experience levels, including beginners.

    Those new to the U of M climbing wall will receive a general climbing orientation at the beginning of the evening, and then will be assisted with getting ready to climb.

    Returning participants will get geared up, warmed up and will not only climb, but will also learn and apply skills for climbing!

    Equipment is included (harnesses, shoes). There is some chalk available to share as well.

    Climb time: starts at 7:00 pm - give yourself enough time before hand to find parking and locate the building and Active Living Centre front desk at the University of Manitoba.

    Difficulty: Open to all levels

    DEADLINE TO REGISTER: BY MIDNIGHT, TWO DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT (FEB. 6) 

    Every full moon has a special kind of energy. February is a transitional time with the brisk winds, deep snow, and our patience as we wait for the spring thaw. The essence of the Snow Moon, also called the Hunger Moon is about hope and embracing change.

    Grab some snowshoes or hiking boots and join us for a unique hiking experience. We will stop periodically to gaze at the full moon (howling optional) and take in the stillness of winter.

    Incorporated into this hike will be an educational component about hiking after dusk and how you can keep yourself safe..  

    It is mandatory that everyone carry their own light source whether a head lamp or flashlight. Cell phone flashlights are acceptable but please note that extreme cold can cause cell phone batteries to fail. 

    Arrival Time: by 6:30 PM. We will begin the event at 6:50 PM with night hiking safety tips and will depart the trail head by 7:10 PM at the latest.  

    LocationWe will meet at the Nimowin Trail located in Bird's Hill Provincial Park (park pass is required).

    Duration: Approximately 2 km, 1.5 hours. 

    Difficulty: Beginner friendly. This activity will be slow and steady with a few stops along the way.

    The trail is doable on foot or with snowshoes. Those on foot are recommended to bring gaiters, extra socks and appropriate boots. Snowshoers need to bring their own equipment or bring rented equipment (snowshoe rentals can be found at Wilderness Supply, MEC, Woodcock Cycle) and of course have appropriate footwear.

Backcountry Women’s primary mandate is to unite, educate, and empower women. We define “women” broadly to include individuals who identify as cisgender, transgender, femme/feminine, genderqueer and non-binary.

This community for outdoors women in Manitoba connects us out on the trails and beyond, and provides a forum to exchange and build our outdoor-related knowledge, skills, and self confidence.

We provide local workshops and activities that helps us address some of the barriers we face as women in the outdoors. We also foster connection among women who love being outside and provide opportunities to join new adventures where you meet like minded people, and potentially get outside your comfort zone!

Backcountry Women believes in a judgement free space for women to encourage and build each other up. We also believe in growing outdoor leaders through our community. Life is better outdoors!
